Carolyn Browne Tamler has worked with me as a subconsultant on many public transit projects over the past 20 years. We have incorporated her envisioning process as an initial Strategic Planning Workshop in many of our successful projects, and it has become our first step in scoping out our public involvement and/or marketing research strategy. We have found this process to be extremely valuable in gaining consensus about what is wanted, and it assures us that the outcomes match the needs and desires of our client and of their constituents. We have always received praise for the manner in which these workshops were conducted and for how the results were presented. A few years ago, our organization established a strategic planning committee, with the ultimate goal of launching a capital campaign to enlarge our facility. One of the first tasks of the committee was to gather information from the community on their thoughts and desires of our organization. Carolyn Tamler stepped up to the plate to lead a focus group in this effort. The focus group was a success, in a large part due to Carolyn’s organizational skills and leadership. Carolyn Tamler facilitated a half-day retreat of the new Board of Directors for the Clinton Chamber of Commerce in April, 2008. Carolyn was focused and attentive to the pre-meeting planning process, ensuring she understood the purpose for our meeting and dynamics and history of our group. She helped us stay focused on the most important issues during the planning, as well as during the meeting itself, not allowing us to bog ourselves down in conversations or actions items that were not directly related to our most important issues. She also demonstrated a good balance between reigning us in and letting us go. The consistent response we receive from others who were not at the retreat but have seen the notes is how much we accomplished during that relatively short period of time.
